HOW TO MEASURE
PUPILLARY
DISTANCE
(Or Where to Find it on Your
Prescription)
What is PD? Why Do I Need It to Buy Glasses?
Your binocular pupillary distance, or PD, is the distance in millimeters between the center of each pupil. This measurement helps ensure the optical center of each lens matches up with your line of sight. Basically, it ensures your prescription is in the correct position for you to see as clearly as possible.
Where Can I Find My PD on My Prescription?
Your measurement should be located in the PD or Pupillary Distance section. It may also be featured in a separate section from the main prescription information. If you have two numbers, your doctor may have measured your dual PD.
Still can’t find it? Don’t worry, there are a few easy ways to obtain your PD. You can request it from your doctor for free or you can walk into a Premier Edge location and get your PD measured there as well.

What If I Don’t Have My PD?
Not all is lost if you don’t have your PD measurement. After all, this measurement is not a requirement to make your purchase. But there are a few reasons you may want to go through the extra effort for the best buying experience.
If you are unable to provide your PD, a standard PD value will be used to fill your prescription. Since this standard value won’t reflect your unique measurements, the optical center of your glasses may not have the ideal placement. This can cause less than optimal correction and may create visual distortion.
Ultimately, it’s always best to provide your PD to Eyeconic for better clarity and to get the most out of your new glasses. And you can even take your measurements yourself!
How to Measure
Your Single PD
We’ll walk you through how to measure your single PD. The range for adults is 54-75 mm and 34-58 mm for children. This measurement is for distance; to calculate your near PD, subtract 3 mm.
Note: When you write down your PD measurement, do not write it on your prescription. This is considered tampering with your prescription and we won’t be able to accept it. Yikes!
Step 1
Tools you’ll need: A ruler that measures millimeters and a mirror.
Step 2
Grab your ruler and stand 8 inches from a mirror.
Step 3
Hold a ruler above your eyes.
Step 4
Close your right eye and align the 0 mm end of the ruler with the center of your left pupil.
Step 5
Keeping your right eye open, close your left eye.
Step 6
The mm line that lines up to the center of your right pupil is your PD. Repeat to ensure accuracy.
How Do I Provide My PD to Eyeconic?
Whether you got your PD from your doctor or measured it yourself, you’ll input your PD during the checkout process.
This graphic shows where you’ll add your PD. Depending on which you have, you can input your single or dual PD. If you have a dual PD, you’ll input your right eye PD first and then your left.
